Wake County woman charged with insurance fraud, false pretense

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Lashonda Renee Brown, 36, of 402 Cedarfield Court, Wendell. Brown was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies. She was also charged with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division accuse Brown of falsely reporting to Peak Property and Casualty Insurance Corp. and the State Highway Patrol that her 2016 Mazda was struck and damaged by a hit-and-run driver, when the damage actually occurred during a different crash. As a result, she received an insurance payment of $6,673.70.

According the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on July 12.

Brown was given a $20.000 secured bond.

“Insurance fraud is never a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
